DEFENDANT CHARGED WITH LEAVING THE SCENE OF JACKSON TOWNSHIP FATAL MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH TO REMAIN DETAINED PENDING TRIAL

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on April 12, 2021, the Honorable Steven F. Nemeth, J.S.C., ordered that Roberto Alcazar-Sanchez, 27, of Jackson, shall remain detained in the Ocean County Jail pending trial on charges of Knowingly Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Death in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:11-5.1, and Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended Driver’s License while being involved in a Motor Vehicle Accident Resulting in Death in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:40-22a.  These charges relate to a motor vehicle crash that occurred in Jackson Township on December 24, 2020 – resulting in the death of Phyllis Shtab, 81, of Howell Township, two days later on December 26, 2020.  

Initially a fugitive from justice, Alcazar-Sanchez surrendered himself to United States Customs and Border Patrol Protection Agents in Laredo, Texas on March 3, 2021.  He was extradited from Texas to New Jersey, and has been lodged in the Ocean County Jail since March 31, 2021. The detention hearing was handled by Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Robert Cassidy.

The press and public are reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
