BEREKELY TOWNSHIP MAN CHARGED WITH POSSESSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY AND OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on March 27, 2024, Joseph Asfor, 45, of Berkeley Township, was charged with Possession of Child Pornography and Obstruction of Justice

An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Unit identified an IP address associated with a Berkeley Township residence as the location from which an individual was uploading images of Child Pornography to the internet.  That individual was ultimately identified as Asfor.

On March 27, 2024, Detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Unit, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, United States Department of Homeland Security Investigations, and Berkeley Township Police Department, executed a court-authorized search warrant on Asfor’s residence in Berkeley Township.  Asfor agreed to speak with Detectives outside the residence.  Once outside, Asfor began to act erratically and Detectives feared for his safety.  As such, Asfor was taken into custody and transported to Berkeley Township Police Headquarters.  An initial forensic examination of Asfor’s cell phone by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Unit led to the discovery of several items of child pornography.  Asfor was placed under arrest at Berkeley Township Police Headquarters; he was transported to the Ocean County Jail, where he is presently lodged pending a detention hearing.

Prosecutor Billhimer commends the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Unit, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit-Megan’s Law Squad, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, United States Department of Homeland Security Investigations, and Berkeley Township Police Department, for their collaborative assistance in connection with this investigation leading to Asfor’s arrest.

The charges referenced above are merely accusations and the press and public are reminded that all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
