BERKELEY TOWNSHIP WILDFIRE RULED ACCIDENTAL

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on September 9, 2024, at approximately 4:45 p.m., the Cedar Bridge Fire Tower reported a wildfire in the area of Fisher’s Pit, located in Berkeley Township.  The fire has burned approximately 200 acres and is now 70 percent contained.

 

A thorough investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office, Berkeley Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, determined that the cause of the fire is accidental by an unknown person(s) improperly extinguishing a campfire.

 

Prosecutor Billhimer acknowledges the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad, New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office, Berkeley Township Police Department Detective Bureau, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit, for their cooperative assistance in connection with this investigation.
