Chief Anthony U. Carrington graduated from Rutgers University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. He began his service to the people of Ocean County in 1994 when he was hired by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office as an Investigator assigned to the Grand Jury Unit.
Chief Carrington graduated from the Division of Criminal Justice Academy at Fort Dix in 1995. He was thereafter assigned to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Strike Force, where he was responsible for the handling of numerous narcotics investigations in Ocean County and throughout the State of New Jersey. In 1999, Chief Carrington was assigned to the Arson and Environmental Investigations Unit; there, he became a certified Arson Investigator, and obtained his Certification as a National Fire Prevention Agency Firefighter Level I and Level II First Responder. Chief Carrington was then assigned to the Major Crime Unit in 2003, where he was tasked with investigating homicides, suicides, industrial accidents, accidental deaths, and missing person cases. Through hard work and diligence, Chief Carrington was promoted to the rank of Senior Investigator in 2004, and then Sergeant of Detectives in 2006. Beginning that year, he helped to create and supervise the County Gang Task Force as well as the Intelligence Unit – responsible for the oversight of homeland security-related matters in coordination with the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, Federal Joint Terrorism Task Force, New Jersey State Health Department, and New Jersey State Police Critical Infrastructure Unit. In his capacity as supervisor of the Gang Task Force, Chief Carrington was designated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as the Ocean/Monmouth County Gang Task Force Coordinator. Chief Carrington’s ascent in the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office continued when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 2017, and then – just two years later – to Captain in 2019, commanding the Special Investigations Unit to include the Internal Affairs, Economic Crime, High Tech Crime, Homeland Intelligence/Gangs/Special Projects, and Senior Scam Units.
On November 4, 2021, in recognition of his skills, abilities, accomplishments, and many years of dedicated and professional service to the people of Ocean County and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, Chief Carrington was promoted to serve as Chief of County Detectives by Prosecutor Billhimer. As Chief of Detectives, Chief Carrington leads the entire investigative staff of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
